A fish supper in Ballycotton – a photograph

Date: July 24th, 2023

Location: Ballycotton

Photographer: Dave Ryan

On a bright summer day in Ballycotton, I had the privilege of capturing a moment that embodied the true essence of togetherness. Gathered on a stone wall overlooking the picturesque Ballycotton Island and its iconic lighthouse, a group of eight friends, shared an unforgettable evening filled with laughter, camaraderie, and the simple pleasure of a fish and chip supper.

As I framed the shot, it felt like I was capturing something special. Each person had a unique pose that reflected their individuality and zest for life. The vibrant backdrop of Ballycotton Island, shrouded in a golden glow from the setting sun, added a touch of magic to the scene.

Amidst the lively chatter, one of the girls captured a candid moment of her friend. This single snapshot reflects the joy of togetherness and the timeless beauty of friendship.

The deliberate choice to present the scene in black and white was purposeful, paying homage to the past while underscoring the enduring essence of the moment. The monochrome effect infused the scene with nostalgia, elevating its significance and lasting impact. Additionally, the composition evoked memories of the iconic “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” photo from 1932, where workers courageously dined in a row atop a girder high above New York City.

In a world that moves at a rapid pace, this photograph serves as a reminder to take the time to sit with friends and ones, embrace the laughter, and enjoy the moments that truly matter, espically over a fish supper by the sea.
